Some weeks ago, Mr. Brown put my card in the "Men Available" list of the A. S. M. E. News. As a result, I began work last month with a company here. I am enclosing herewith postal order for $10 to be credited to Mr. Brown's department, the Employment Bureau. This is a slight token of my appreciation of his services, and in the hope that it will aid to the extent of getting some other fellow a job. A telegram or other item within its limits may turn the scale. There is a lesson in the transaction. I received but the one reply to my card, but that was just as good as a thousand. It is the opportunities a man seizes that count; not the opportunities that open to him. How have mining engineers fared? That is a difficult question to answer. There have been fewer openings offered for mining engineers than for others, yet these other positions have been thrown open to mining engineers through our cooperating plan, and many of our men have found needed temporary or permanent employment. It is safe to say that the miners have profited to a greater extent by the joint bureau than would have been possible by the older independent service. Possibilities of Engineering Societies Library THE policy of the library is to develop the work soundly, to keep its activities within the available funds and to strive for quality before quantity. In the face of the many things that are crying to be done, this is difficult. There are many directions in which the library could be made more useful, if its resources would permit.
